he was released from prison early this morning to a halfway house then after less than one hour. he left and is now fulfilling the rest of his sentence under home confinement. good afternoon. i'm steve sanders. and i'm dina bair. we welcome our viewers who are watching us around the country on wgn america and on the web. yes spent a good part of this morning get angry acclimated to his home. he was not here at the salvation army freedom center

very long. it seems that due to his age and condition the bureau of prisons cut him a break. he is able to serve the remainder of his sentence at home on confinement. after five years of monotony of former disgraced governor spent this morning traveling through downtown chicago. the governor is a very close to being a completely free man. this is another step and a long journey. as he begins his transition back into the free world. he does so as a convicted felon. he would like me to tell you there he is grateful to leave the penitentiary. he is grateful also for the support

and encouragement that he has received from many people. his son drove him straight here to the salvation army freedom center. the former governor wanted to see the light. since his imprisonment began today's trip was his third opportunity to venture outside. he had not forgotten how to do that. he is in decent spirits. obviously it is such a stark change from the penitentiary life that he has become accustomed to seeing things. is there is serious prize for his 2006 conviction.

those gifts can never make up for the loss of his good name. ryan and his family now have next to nothing. prime lost his brother was serving his time. he is going to go forward with his life. the best he can. he wants to stay here in a dorm style room with the use of a communal bath. the bureau of prisons determined that due to his age and condition he should be allowed to return to his home on home confinement. he understands

something about working out. that activity has resulted in a thin and george ryan. not that much older. pretty good. not that much older than he saw. the governor says, is doing very well other than fighting a cold and an infected tooth. right now he is back home in the house that he once shared with his wife. his children have been trying to keep that house up in preparation for this day. the house was not in the greatest shape five and a half years ago.

the f-b-i and police in alabama are working to free a young boy being held hostage in an underground bunker. authorities say a gunman boarded a school bus yesterday afternoon. shot the driver and took a 6-year old boy. neighbors say the suspect moved to the area about two years ago and built the underground shelter himself. other children on the bus were not injured. police are negotiating the with man to release the boy. communicating through a pipe. authorities did convince the man to let them send down medication the boy needs to take on a daily basis. fierce debate on capitol hill this morning over gun control in the united states. former congresswoman gabrielle giffords. who was shot in the head in 20-11 was among those who spoke at the hearing this morning. this is the first congressional hearing on gun violence since a series of violent shooting sprees and president obama's call for stricter gun laws. the powerful gun lobby led by n-r-a executive director wayne lapierre says before we enact new laws. current laws need to be enforced.

the c-d-c says except for flu shots, vaccination coverage for adults is "unacceptably low". too few adults are taking advantage of vaccines to protect them from diseases like whooping cough, shingles, and pneumonia. in 2011, there were about 37 thousand cases of preventable pneumonia that resulted in four thousand deaths. most of the deaths were among people 50 and older. there were more than nine thousand whooping cough cases among adults last year. and health officials say only about a third of adults at high risk for hepatitis b have been vaccinated. older women with heart problems may be at greater risk for mental changes that signal a type of dementia. it's called vascular dementia and it's different from the loss of memory and function that happens with alzheimer's disease. researchers measured the brain

functions of elderly people over four years. they found heart problems. including atrial fibrillation, coronary artery disease and heart failure. nearly doubled a person's risk of developing the mild cognitive impairment linked to vascular dementia. the link was particularly strong in women. the study is published in the journal jama neurology. eating deep fried food at least once a week may increase a man's risk for prostate cancer. a new study followed three thousand men about half of them diagnosed with prostate cancer. when researchers from the fred hutchinson cancer research center examined dietary quesionnaires, they found the prostate cancer risk of men who ate french fries, fried chicken, fried fish or doughnuts at least once a week was 30 to 37 percent higher. the researchers don't know why but they suggest it could be because deep frying releases potentially cancer-causing compounds in the cooking oil or fatan iraq war veteran who lost all four of his limbs in battle has a chance at a new life. after receiving a successful double-arm transplant. 26-year-old brendan marrocco was driving an armored vehicle when it was hit by an explosion
